Týr wis stairtit in Januar 1998 whan Heri Joensen met up wi an auld baundmate o his, Kári Streymoy, at a pairty in Colpenhaven. Joensen sugeestit tae Streymoy that they shoud tryst for tae jam. Streymoy wisna sae keen at first, but later decidit tae dae it. They war suin jyned by anither auld baundmate o theirs, bassist Gunnar H. Thomsen, makkin thaim a trio. They decidit tae mak muisic that wis hivily inspired bi Norse meethologie, Faroese fowk muisic, Iron Maiden an Dream Theatre. Ower the nine year o the baund's exeestance baundmates haes come an gane. Vocalist Pól Arni Holm an guitarist Jón Joensen (Heri's brither) wis pairt o the baund while they recordit How Far To Asgaard but quat the baund no lang efter it wis pitten oot. Terji Skibenæs jyned the baund efter Jón Joensen haed quat. Allan Streymoy (Kári's brither), teuk ower the singin for a bit time while they recordit an set futh the single Ólavur Riddararós. Efter Allan quat Heri Joensen teuk ower the vocals. It wis this line-up that recordit Eric the Red. Terji Skibenæs quat the baund for a bit time efer Eric the Red wis pitten oot. The baund pleyed as a trio for some time, but in the simmer o 2004 a guitarist frae Iceland cried Ottó P. Arnarson jyned for a wee while. Efter Ottó left, Terji cam back.
