Annabella Schnabel (born 6 July 1993.) is a Hungarian film director and screenwriter. Her short films have been featured at numerous international film festivals. Her work often explores social issues, the reinterpretation of female roles, and a grotesque visual style.[1]
Annabella Schnabel was born in 1993 in Budapest. She earned her BA degree in Film Theory and Film History from Eötvös Loránd University in 2015. In 2018, she graduated on Producer BA at the University of Theatre and Film Arts (SZFE), and in 2020, she graduated with an MA in Film Directing from the same institution. Her mentors included Péter Gothár, Mihály Schwechtje, Tamás Hutlassa, and Miklós Bosnyák.
Alongside her freelance work, she taught Film Production and Film History for one academic year (2022–2023) at the Európa 2000 Secondary School. Currently, she works as an independent filmmaker and is a grantee of the Hungarian Academy of Arts.
Annabella Schnabel gained recognition as a Director and Screenwriter of short films. Her works have been featured at more than 50 festivals worldwide. Among her most well-known films are It’s a Match! (2018), Referral (2019), Mom’s Cat (2021), and The Triptych of the Keeper (2022).
Her work often combines drama with dark humor. Recurring themes in her films include dysfunctional social structures, the vulnerability of women, gender inequality, and the redefinition of female roles and sensitivity. Her visual style leans toward the grotesque and experimental, frequently embracing aesthetics that transcend realism and favor surprising visual and narrative elements.
Her short films have been showcased at numerous prestigious international festivals. Mom’s Cat (2021) premiered at the A-listed, Academy Award-qualifying 43rd Moscow International Film Festival in 2021, and was later selected for other Oscar- and BAFTA-qualifying events, including the 70th Melbourne International Film Festival, the 40th Rhode Island International Film Festival, and the 52nd Nashville Film Festival, earning Student Academy Award qualification. Her earlier shorts It’s a Match! (2018) and Referral (2019) also received recognition at many International and Hungarian festivals, just as her adaptation of István Örkény “One-Minute Story” did, The Triptych of the Keeper (2022).
In addition to narrative films, Annabella has directed commercials for the Godot Gallery, Stílus és Technika Publishing, Európa 2000 Secondary School, and Homestage Film. She has also created music videos for the bands Plútó and Amor Fati, as well as educational video series for the Hungarian Educational Authority.
