APUNE - Association of American Study Abroad Programs in Spain
Founded in 1968, APUNE is the oldest association in Europe dedicated to serving the needs of American Study Abroad Programs in Spain and supporting the Study Abroad community as a whole. It approves Study Abroad programs from myriad US universities, holds frequent conferences around Spain that brings together the Study Abroad community while also supporting US students as they adjust to their time abroad.
HISTORY
The first meeting of North American study abroad program directors in Spain was held in the Spanish Canary Islands in 1968, and from this the association grew - with academic quality as the main topic on the agenda.
By the mid-1970s there were already 30 member Study Abroad programs with information booklets released to help spread the word.
The following decade saw its statutes created and it was legally registered as an association in Spain. In 1992 the statues were changed so that they fully complied with Spanish laws. Just before the new millennium, credits obtained by the Community of Madrid are recognized.
In the 2000s it really started growing. Its first website was launched (https://www.apune.org/), its services were expanded and in 2009 orientation meetings for new directors and staff in Madrid, Barcelona and Seville took place. Then in 2012 the first Meeting between Spanish and North American Universities at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid was held. This instigated a tradition that has since been maintained - regular meetings between north American and Spanish education specialists at a university somewhere in Spain.

As it builds bridges between the education facilities of the US and Spain, it has developed some quality relationships with affiliated partners. The USA EMBASSY IN SPAIN, SPANISH SERVICE FOR THE INTERNATIONALIZATION OF EDUCATION (SEPIE), FULBRIGHT COMMISSION, FORUM ON EDUCATION ABROAD, CERVANTES INSTITUTE and the INSTITUTE are some of its main honorary members.
