Fresh Force is a hip-hop group formed in 1984 in Madison, Wisconsin. The group gained regional attention in the Midwest throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, performing across Wisconsin and Illinois and opening for national acts. Fresh Force is recognized as one of the pioneering rap groups in the Madison area.
Fresh Force was founded by Oren "Finesse" Ben-Ami, Erin "DJ Sweet E" Hynum, Johnny "Savior Faire" Winston Jr., Richard "Daddy Rich" Henderson, and Emanuel "MC Yokes" Whitfield. The group began performing at local high school talent shows, block parties, and community events. Their performance at a Madison West High School talent show led to a contract with American TV spokesperson Len Mattioli ("TV Lenny"), resulting in a series of televised holiday commercials.
Their regional popularity helped them secure opening performances for national and Grammy-winning artists, including Speech (of Arrested Development), Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, Ready for the World, Glenn Medeiros, EPMD, The Cheaters, and Fast Eddie.[1]
In 1987, Fresh Force recorded their debut vinyl EP, which included the tracks "We Rock the House", "Always Together", and "Prejudice". The EP was produced at Smart Studios in Madison, with production support from Butch Vig and Steve Marker—who later gained acclaim as members of the band Garbage. Vig went on to produce Nirvana's Nevermind.
In 1990, the group signed with Chicago-based independent label D.J. International Records. Two tracks were released commercially: "Who Runs This Mutha" (1990) and "Body House" (1991), the latter of which appeared on the label’s Jack Master VI compilation album.
Fresh Force is considered a foundational group in Madison’s hip-hop history. In 2023, they reunited to headline the MadLit concert series in downtown Madison. The group has been featured in local exhibits and retrospectives documenting the city's early hip-hop scene.[2]
