Community First Credit Union of Florida (CFCUF) is a member-owned, not-for-profit financial institution headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida. As of 2024, the credit union manages over $2.8 billion in assets and serves more than 175,000 members across 17 Florida counties. It operates 23 branches and employs approximately 450 staff.[1]

History

The credit union was founded in 1935 as the Duval County Teachers Credit Union and renamed Educational Community Credit Union (ECCU) in 1980.[2] In 2000, ECCU expanded its membership field to include Nassau and Baker counties. In 2005, it adopted the name Community First Credit Union to reflect its broader community scope.[3] In 2020, the organization expanded its Jacksonville headquarters after acquiring and renovating the adjacent Diamond‑S building.[4]

Mergers

In 2005, Community First merged with St. Johns County Teachers Credit Union, adding 3,848 members and $14 million in assets. It also absorbed 8 Flags Federal Credit Union that year, adding 4,000 members and $25 million in assets.[1]

Leadership

Former CFO and CRO Sam Inman became President and CEO in 2024, succeeding long-time leader John Hirabayashi, who served for 28 years.[5]

Membership

Membership is available to residents and workers in 17 Florida counties. Family members of eligible individuals and employees of partner organizations are also eligible to join.[1]

Community Involvement

Community First Igloo

In 2021, the credit union entered a 10-year naming-rights agreement for the Jacksonville Ice & Sportsplex, which reopened in 2023 as the Community First Igloo. It now includes two NHL-size rinks, a sports bar, and training facilities.[6][7]

Seawalk Music Festival

Community First has been the title sponsor since 2012 for this free annual two-day festival at Jacksonville Beach.[8]

Florida Theatre Sponsorship

The credit union became the first-ever season-long sponsor in 2017, supporting programming and operations.[1]

Community First Cares Foundation

Founded in 2013, the foundation provides grants to nonprofits and communities across Northeast Florida. In 2023, it awarded over $100,000 and funded 147 classroom projects.[1][9] In July 2024, the Foundation and Jax Melanin Market launched a $20,000 microgrant initiative, awarding five $1,000 grants through Community First Cares. The first recipients were selected during the Juneteenth event in June 2024.[10][11]
