IP 108.28.146.23

Hi Fathoms Below. Thanks for your comments at User talk:Materialscientist#IP 2600:4040:2dca:1e00:e671:a363:289:cf77. I think, however, the IP account user discussed there might've come back 108.28.146.23. That account has already been blocked by PhilKnight, but it was an account that hadn't edited from May 2012 until yesterday. Anyway, the latest IP account has already made an unblock request that was declined by 331dot, who might not be aware of the account's possible connection to other blocked accounts. Is there anything else that can be done here besides page protection? -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:14, 23 September 2025 (UTC)

Hi @Marchjuly I don't think page protection is needed at the moment. It looks like you're right that the vandal did come back under the IP 108.28.146.23, though none of the individual pages (such as Yellow Bear) that have been targeted contain vandalizing edits other than the ones from the range I blocked earlier and this IP. If a new IP or account continues to vandalize these pages and who is clearly the same person behind the blocked IPs, a report to RFPP for one or all of these pages might be necessary. So in other words, this block evasion is approaching the disruption level that protection might be necessary, but not quite yet. Fathoms Below (talk) 22:10, 23 September 2025 (UTC)

FAC mentoring

Hello! I'm considering eventually nominating the article 15.ai to FA status, and having never nominated an article to FA status before, I'd like to get some help doing so. I saw that you specialize in video game articles, and since most of the sources used in the article are from WP:VG/RS, I'd love your thoughts on what could be done to elevate this article. Thank you for your time! –GM 23:33, 21 October 2025 (UTC)

Hi there @GregariousMadness. I'm not that familiar with 15.ai, and I haven't been at FAC for a little while now, but I think I can give some general comments. Since you haven't done a FAC before, one of the most important things that will happen when you eventually nominate the article is a "spot check", where people check to make sure all of the sources are actually saying what they are cited for. There will also be a lot of emphasis on making sure that the sourcing is as high-quality as possible, and I'd encourage you to familiarize yourself with the authors and editorial policies of each of the sources so that you can inform FAC commenters about them and justify their reliability. Aside from that, most of the FAC comments will deal with prose quality, and there are a few essays that might be able to help: WP:REDEX, WP:ELEVAR and User:Tony1/Advanced editing exercises are a few that I have recommended to some others. Would you like me to look over the article a bit and do some copyediting? I should be able to do some later in the week. Fathoms Below (talk) 15:45, 22 October 2025 (UTC)
Understood. Yes, a copyedit would be excellent, thank you! As for There will also be a lot of emphasis on making sure that the sourcing is as high-quality as possible, I did read this in the criteria, but I'm not sure what high-quality exactly means. If the source is listed as reliable in WP:NPPSG or WP:VG/RS, does that mean it is high-quality? Or does high-quality mean a certain selective subset of sources within those categories? –GM 23:13, 22 October 2025 (UTC)
On second thought, I think it might be best if I copyedited the article myself since it would be a great learning experience. I'll do so after reading the links you mentioned and ask you for comments afterwards! –GM 23:22, 22 October 2025 (UTC)

Question from Mulcheater2010 (22:59, 27 October 2025)

How do I add citations --Mulcheater2010 (talk) 22:59, 27 October 2025 (UTC)

Hi @Mulcheater2010 and welcome to Wikipedia! We have a page for introducing people to citing sources here. This page has a lot of linked policies and guidelines, and might be a bit tricky to understand at first for newcomers, so if you have any specific questions on how to cite sources or which sources you should cite, feel free to ask here on my talk page or at the Teahouse, an area where new users like yourself can go to look for help. Once again, welcome! Fathoms Below (talk) 23:30, 27 October 2025 (UTC)

Guide to temporary accounts

Hello, Fathoms Below. This message is being sent to remind you of significant upcoming changes regarding logged-out editing.

Starting 4 November, logged-out editors will no longer have their IP address publicly displayed. Instead, they will have a temporary account (TA) associated with their edits. Users with some extended rights like administrators and CheckUsers, as well as users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will still be able to reveal temporary users' IP addresses and all contributions made by temporary accounts from a specific IP address or range.

How do temporary accounts work?

Editing from a temporary account
  • When a logged-out user completes an edit or a logged action for the first time, a cookie will be set in this user's browser and a temporary account tied with this cookie will be automatically created for them. This account's name will follow the pattern: ~2025-12345-67 (a tilde, year of creation, a number split into units of 5).
  • All subsequent actions by the temporary account user will be attributed to this username. The cookie will expire 90 days after its creation. As long as it exists, all edits made from this device will be attributed to this temporary account. It will be the same account even if the IP address changes, unless the user clears their cookies or uses a different device or web browser.
  • A record of the IP address used at the time of each edit will be stored for 90 days after the edit. Users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will be able to see the underlying IP addresses.
  • As a measure against vandalism, there are two limitations on the creation of temporary accounts:
    • There has to be a minimum of 10 minutes between subsequent temporary account creations from the same IP (or /64 range in case of IPv6).
    • There can be a maximum of 6 temporary accounts created from an IP (or /64 range) within a period of 24 hours.

How to enable IP Reveal

Impact for administrators

  • It will be possible to block many abusers by just blocking their temporary accounts. A blocked person won't be able to create new temporary accounts quickly if the admin selects the autoblock option.
  • It will still be possible to block an IP address or IP range.
  • Temporary accounts will not be retroactively applied to contributions made before the deployment. On Special:Contributions, you will be able to see existing IP user contributions, but not new contributions made by temporary accounts on that IP address. Instead, you should use Special:IPContributions for this (see a video about IPContributions in a gallery below).

Rules about IP information disclosure

  • Publicizing an IP address gained through TAIV access is generally not allowed (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 previously edited as 192.0.2.1 or ~2025-12345-67's IP address is 192.0.2.1).
  • Publicly linking a TA to another TA is allowed if "reasonably believed to be necessary". (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 and ~2025-12345-68 are likely the same person, so I am counting their reverts together toward 3RR, but not Hey ~2025-12345-68, you did some good editing as ~2025-12345-67)
  • See Wikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer § What can and can't be said for more detailed guidelines.

Useful tools for patrollers

  • It is possible to view if a user has opted-in to view temporary account IPs via the User Info card, available in Preferences → Appearance → Advanced options → Tick Enable the user info card
    • This feature also makes it possible for anyone to see the approximate count of temporary accounts active on the same IP address range.
  • Special:IPContributions allows viewing all edits and temporary accounts connected to a specific IP address or IP range.
  • Similarly, Special:GlobalContributions supports global search for a given temporary account's activity.
  • The auto-reveal feature (see video below) allows users with the right permissions to automatically reveal all IP addresses for a limited time window.

Some fun times we had in 2023/24 man, why is it already almost 2026? and I'm glad we knew each other during it. I neutraled your RfA (which it's crazy that was almost 2 years ago, I remember it like yesterday), but god that must have been horrible for you and I am glad you ultimately triumphed and were a good admin. I hope offwiki life is good to you and please take care of yourself. I'm still around, here or on Discord, if you need anything from me (or just want to chat, I'm always open to that). charlotte 👸♥ 08:56, 7 November 2025 (UTC)
