Spoken article review
Hi there, just wondering if you're still planning to review the audio file for the George Washington article as per the Spoken Wikipedia review list. If not, it's totally fine -- feel free to remove yourself from the list or I can do so. If you have already recorded the file please let me know. Thank you.
Hi, can you make a comment about my new project Encyclopine.org
hi,
Hi, can you make a comment about my new project Encyclopine.org?
Phone number for public phone box
Hi, Hassocks5489.
I was pleased to see your photo of the K6 phone booth outside St. Mary's in Shoreham. Would you happen to have a phone number for it (if it indeed remains a public phone box with a number)? I am setting up an Easter Treasure Hunt remotely, using Google Earth, and would very much like to enable a small boy to cause the phone to ring. I'd be grateful f you could reply to gordonink at gmail.com before April 2nd, 2015.
Thanks in advance for your attention to the above,
Gordonink

Hiya! See what you think of my recent edits to Buildings and architecture of Brighton and Hove. I've done a little bit of tinkering (nothing major!) and added a section for monuments. All sourced, of course! And including a few red links in case we're looking for a project! Now put it up for peer review. Right now! ;) I reckon a few updates might be needed here (things like statistics that age quicker than other things) and there but otherwise I can't see any reason it wouldn't do well at FAC. The only other criticism I can foresee is the length, but worst-case scenario there is we hive some of it off into sub-articles. But we'll cross that bridge if we get to it. Put it up for PR! Also, checking we're good for 25 October in Portsmouth and 29 November in Brighton (assuming I can get the time off work but that time of year it shouldn't be a problem). Would be good to have a list of things we want to see in Portsmouth so we can plan in advance. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts?19:29, 8 September 2025 (UTC)
@HJ Mitchell: Cheers Harry – I'll have a proper look at BABH tomorrow or later this week, but from a brief glance all seems good. I'll try to get round to launching a PR before my Bournemouth trip next week. (By the way, are there any pics you need in the Bournemouth/Christchurch/Poole areas?)
Both 25th Oct and 29th Nov are confirmed as good for me. I'll think of some Portsmouth things: I have put together some lists for myself in the past of things worth photographing, mostly listed or locally listed buildings. I'll look through those and refine them into a possible "plan". Cheers, Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!)20:20, 8 September 2025 (UTC)
I'll check the work calendar tomorrow and aim to start advertising the meetups in the next week or so assuming all is good. I don't know Portsmouth well. I took the city's war memorial to FA some years ago and the navy memorial on Southsea Common has been on my to-do list for a long time. There's plenty of naval/maritime monuments near the seafront but I've never really explored the city centre or the harbour. The dockyard and museums would be interesting but they're pricey! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts?21:01, 8 September 2025 (UTC)
It's been a week and I'm still not seeing a peer review or any work on BABH! ;) On another note, do you have any literature on the civil war in Sussex? Apparently there was a battle at/near Stopham Bridge but I can't find any detail. If you have anything on the bridge in general I'd love to see it. Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts?22:29, 15 September 2025 (UTC)
@HJ Mitchell: Hope all is well! I'm not long back from my Bournemouth trip, so I've been sorting out photos – another thousand-odd to add to the infamous backlog! – and doing a bit of uploading. I'll hopefully get round to taking it to PR tomorrow: I've written myself a note. Cheers for the tweaks: all looks good. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!)21:44, 22 September 2025 (UTC)
Glad to see you finally got it up at PR! I'll watchlist the review and do some bits of tinkering when I get chance. I've still got Portsmouth pencilled in my calendar for 25 October and Brighton for 29 November; are we still on for those? If so, I'll sort the paperwork on Meta. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts?20:57, 29 September 2025 (UTC)
Cheers! Yep, all good for both dates. I'm putting together a list of possibly interesting buildings to photograph in Pompey; will add it to the page once the paperwork is complete. Hopefully the weather will behave! Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!)21:36, 29 September 2025 (UTC)
Excellent – that will work fine for me. I'll check the trains in the morning; if there are problems with that one, there is a Southampton service 15 minutes before (arr. Ford 0950 or Barnham 0955) which will connect at Havant with Pompey services. Will update you by text if required, otherwise I'll be in the front carriage. See you then! Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!)12:24, 30 September 2025 (UTC)
Morning! I was back "home" in Hassocks the other week, randomly! Yep, all set for Saturday; I will aim for the front carriage of the 0932 from Hove, which is the 1018 from Barnham. See you then, Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!)08:54, 22 October 2025 (UTC)
Hey, got any photos of this in your backlog? I was scouring Commons and see you've uploaded a handful of photos of Circus Parade but not the sculpture. If you haven't seen, List of public art in West Sussex is live (but is obviously not complete and could do with some prettifying; we also need quite a few photos). B&H is in progress in my sandbox; not many missing photos so far but some aren't great. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts?22:05, 17 November 2025 (UTC)
Annoyingly not: I checked the relevant folder but there's nothing closer-up than this one. I might be in Brighton on Saturday, although the weather may be poor: I'll see what I can do. Otherwise I'll add it and the various others to the list of pix to take! I'm doing some work on Crawley at the moment, which is at risk of GAR, but once that's finished I'll try to help out at the West Sussex and B&H lists. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!)22:59, 17 November 2025 (UTC)
Oooh, you can just about see it. Any chance you could crop that? I don't have any software for working on images on this computer! The public art lists are a nice little side project that's also keeping me busy on Commons and Wikidata marrying everything up. I've been trying to diffuse some of the high-level categories while looking for photos of public art. Was quite impressed with this accidental find in Crawley! Let me know if you need a hand with anything on Crawley. Not my area of expertise but Tilgate Park is pretty. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts?23:20, 17 November 2025 (UTC)
Thank you for offering to help put together a "history of public transport" page sometime
I will be coming to live in Brighton around April next year and likely getting involved in public transport advocacy work at that point. Meanwhile, if you can suggest some reading material about the history of Brighton and Hove buses and trams that I could access from overseas I would be willing to have a go at a draft page you could edit and fill out to get the ball rolling? Greenwich London page
Hi there! Firsly, I love the work you do on Wiki and donate regularly to keep this wonderful site going.
I was hoping that you could please amend a slight error on the Greenwich, London page? You have added a voice note for the pronunciation saying "London borough of Greenwich" but I'm afraid that you have pronounced Greenwich incorrectly.
It is pronounced "Grin-itch" and not "Grehnich". Unfortunaltly i the last few decades I've heard more and more people saying it wrong and it now seems to be that the only people who say it correctly are people from Greenwich :-)
If you're wondering about my credentials, my family have lived in Greenwich and Deptford for over 200 years Which i hope qualifies me to comment! :-)
Hello! Voting in the 2025 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 1 December 2025. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
In the early to mid 1990's there was a road widening/improvement scheme for the A27, which resulted in Brighton effectively being bypassed? (Lewes has been bypassed previously (in the 1970's)? Are you able to give any more researched nuances on this?
The Wikipedia article by that title relates to 2009 road scheme in Australia, not in the United Kingdom.
In addition the A26/A27 road to the East of Lewes was the subject of a study in the Mid 1990's was to improvement, with at one point Southeram Grey pit being considered for a new line for the A26/A27 road, IIRC?. Again it may be worth looking into.
Until more recent developments, the Culifal Tunnel to the East of Lewes was somewhat unique, in being an extensive non-underwater tunnel in the United Kingdom.
Hi ShakespeareFan00: yes, this is very much an area of interest. I have thought about researching and writing a Brighton Bypass article (probably under the title Brighton and Hove bypass) for some years, but have never got round to trying to assemble sources. Newspapers are likely to be the best source: other than The Encyclopaedia of Brighton (written in 1990, before it opened) and possibly the revised edition published in 2011 (which I have), I can't think of any books which discuss it. Legal stuff, like the names and dates of Acts of Parliament and Orders, should be available in The London Gazette. There may also be stuff in the reference libraries in Hove and Brighton. I'm not so familiar with the history of roads around Lewes, but the reference library or the county archives (I have a reader's card) might provide pointers. I'll see what I can dig up. Pinging HJ Mitchell as well for info. Cheers, Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!)17:30, 25 November 2025 (UTC)
Also at some point, Lewes Library (in or near Friars Walk) used to have a reasonably extensive Local History collection (Although I'm not sure if this included Brighton.)
The (hypothetical A26) Widening Scheme, would IIRC have been a 1923 Highways Agency or DoT study, which I encountered whilst on Work Experience with the East Sussex County Council's Planning section (around 1993).
Another local Journal which might have something about the Brighton scheme is the Sussex Express (although it's focus tended to be more Lewes and rurual fringe than Brighton.. Hmm)
Good stuff. I'll continue to collect sources. I can see that the Encyclopaedia of Brighton (1990) has a whole section (maybe 300 words) on it: by this time the route had been finalised and construction work had started. I've found more detail about the original plans in the 1970s too. Have to go out now, but expect more updates in the next few days. Also, I will try to raise the bypass and the possibility of an article for it as a discussion topic at this Saturday's Wikipedia Meetup in Brighton, which you would be most welcome to join if central Brighton is still accessible for you and you are free that day. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!)19:20, 25 November 2025 (UTC)
Personally, I'd start by expanding the A27 road articles. A lot of what you can dig up is probably applicable to the whole route, and if you end up overwhelming that article with the Brighton (and Hove?) Bypass, you can still spin it out into a separate article. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts?22:37, 25 November 2025 (UTC)
The Brighton Bypass is interesting, because it was done just in the nick of time before Twyford Down and the Newbury Bypass called all major UK road construction projects to a halt.
Having a quick look around, there are some sources here, here and here. The last one talks about the New Austrian Tunnelling Method. Also, for basic facts, you should be able to consult the Parliamentary Hansard and the London Gazette. The funny but incredibly well-researched Pathetic Motorways comes from detailed research in the National Archives, the London Metropolitan Archives and elsewhere; my opinion it it's perfectly acceptable as a reliable source, though it is run by a close friend of mine so take what I say with a pinch of salt. I don't think it's got anything on the Brighton Bypass.
I'm sure I read at the time that John Prescott cancelled half of the A27 Polegate Bypass when Labour won the 1997 election, while the other half was built under the line proposed by the Tories previously. But I can't find a source for that right now. Ritchie333(talk)(cont)09:12, 27 November 2025 (UTC)
