I agree with the proposal to split the category. With only two articles, it doesn't provide much value, and splitting it into more specific categories would help with navigation and better organization. --Jeong seolah (talk) 06:23, 25 April 2025 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: Peoplle are being misplaced in the date category, which is intended to be more specific than the year one, suggesting that the distinction may fail WP:ARBITRARYCAT, particularly for people who were born or died around the turn of a new year. –LaundryPizza03 (dc̄) 20:17, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
Oppose. There are numerous entries, such as Nuruddin Ahmed (1904 – 1975) was an Indian lawyer and three-time mayor of Delhi which solely indicate subject's years, but not dates. There are also many entries which indicate one, but not the other, such as Georges Blun (1 June 1893 – 1999) was a French journalist, thus categories that indicate absence of years should be separate from categories that indicate absence of dates, with the more important category aspect focusing upon the absence of years, rather than the absence of dates. —Roman Spinner(talk • contribs)21:45, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
Weak oppose, in that Roman's logic makes sense to me: the administrative category "Date missing" implies a more specific and difficult administrative task than "Year missing." Now, "Year of death unknown" is usefully symmetric to "1925 deaths" etc. — it shows that the obligatory "died when?" category isn't just missing from the page. But personally I see no reason for the "Date of death uncertain/unknown" semantic categories to exist; that's uselessly broad, including as it does such people as (recently, famously) Gene Hackman; and it doesn't serve an administrative purpose either IMHO. So I'd just delete "Date of death unknown" and "Date of death uncertain" and leave the rest as-is. I also note that Roman himself proposed a YOB missing->DOB missing merger nineteen years ago, in 2006, and it didn't take then, either. :) --Quuxplusone (talk) 01:21, 25 April 2025 (UTC)

Upon reflection, I think Category:African return diaspora (having only 1 subcategory) might not have enough content to be needed at the moment. Maybe that can be recreated in the future when there is more content to fill it. But the other two categories feel reasonable; secondary diasporas are distinct from "primary" diasporas in terms of being a lot more distant from their ancestral country, and I think it's helpful for readers to be able to quickly find that phenomenon while still being linked to it from the main diaspora's category. GreekApple123 (talk) 21:15, 17 April 2025 (UTC)
But the secondary diaspora just makes it harder to find. Like is there a specific distance here? Because it doesn't seem to me that distance from the homeland of the diaspora is a defining feature, like why is African American secondary, but Black Britain is not?SMasonGarrison00:36, 18 April 2025 (UTC)
Regarding your example of comparing African American and Black British, you have not noticed the exact characteristics of those diasporas. African-Americans are the diaspora formed by Africans directly ending up in America, so that is a "primary" diaspora (only one migratory stage). Note that the term "African-American diaspora" is used in Wikipedia to refer to the diaspora of African-Americans i.e. the African-Americans who have migrated out of America; this forms a secondary diaspora in relation to Africa, and so Category:African-American diaspora is under Category:African secondary diaspora, while Category:African-American society (which is for African-Americans) is not. The "Black Britain" page you mentioned is actually named "British African-Caribbean people", and they trace their immediate migratory heritage to the Caribbean, and only before that to Africa. That is what makes them a secondary diaspora (two stages of migration). Note that there is a separate page for the general African diaspora in Britain (I believe it covers both primary and secondary) at Black British people. Also, if you are looking for more understanding on how the secondary diaspora concept is already covered in other parts of Wikipedia, see Template:African diaspora.
A compromise I thought of would be to maintain the secondary diaspora categories as they are, but simultaneously categorize all of their articles under the primary diaspora category. I think that would be helpful for those who want to navigate Category:Secondary diasporas while making the content maximally visible for those navigating under the primary diasporas.
I believe in the value of having categorization for secondary diasporas, as there will be more of them in the future as migration continues, and they will have characteristics that do not exactly match up with those of "primary" diasporas; their characteristics will be determined by both their initial homeland and the second place they settled in, and therefore there is more analysis required to cover them (and therefore more categorization). Also, when articles are written about "tertiary" diasporas (three stages of migration), I would like to add the requisite categorization for that phenomenon, presumably by nesting that underneath secondary diasporas. But I can't do that if you delete all categorization relating to secondary diasporas. GreekApple123 (talk) 00:51, 18 April 2025 (UTC)
Merge for now, because of insufficient content. I would not object to recreation of the secondarg diaspora category when more articles about secondary diaspora are written (an overview article about the topic to begin with, and possibly more country articles). Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus. Relisting comment: Consensus currently favors merging Category:African return diaspora, but more participation is needed to form consensus regarding the other two nominated categories. Comment I kind of disagree that being a Super Bowl champ isn't defining. I was on a wikibreak when that cat got Cfded but I probably would have !voted to keep it. It's always mentioned in obituaries and stuff if someone was a Super Bowl champ, likewise for NBA champ. It looks like you actually !voted to keep the Super Bowl cat too.~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 20:16, 16 April 2025 (UTC)
