Concepita e lanciata da James Loeb (1867–1933), banchiere e filantropo, la collana si aprì nel 1911, all'inizio sotto la direzione di T.E. Page, W.H.D. Rouse ed Edward Capps, presso l'editore William Heinemann.
Prima della prima guerra mondiale uscirono 54 volumi. In seguito la collana si assestò intorno ai 10 titoli all'anno. Dal 1939 al 1945, nonostante la guerra uscirono 38 volumi (anche se nell'anno 1944, per la prima volta dalla fondazione, non uscì neanche un titolo). Benché i depositi fossero stati bombardati, circa una metà dei 369 titoli fino ad allora pubblicati vennero messi in salvo.
Dopo una crisi negli anni cinquanta, che si protrasse per molti anni, venne riorganizzato un rilancio nel 1973.
Struttura
Con il colore della copertina fin dall'inizio verde per i testi greci e rosso per i latini, ha poi via via sostituito i titoli con volumi corretti e aggiornati in varie edizioni successive. L'impianto editoriale è invece rimasto lo stesso: apparato critico minimo, massima cura filologica, testo originale e traduzione inglese. Il formato è 111 mm per 168 mm.
La Harvard University gestisce la serie dal 1989, con un ritmo di quattro o cinque volumi all'anno, tra nuovi e riedizioni.
Nel 2001 la Harvard University Press ha iniziato una seconda serie di libri con lo stesso formato e di colore blu, la Tatti Renaissance Library, che presenta testi latini del Rinascimento con traduzione inglese. Nel 2010 una terza serie, la Dumbarton Oaks Medieval Library, di colore marrone, presenta testi della cultura medievale, in greco bizantino, latino medievale e antico inglese.
Il logo rappresenta Atena, dea della saggezza, seduta su un trono con accanto uno scudo su cui sono incise le tre lettere LCL (per Loeb Classical Library), e con sulla mano destra la figura di Nike, che simboleggia la vittoria. L'immagine viene da una moneta trovata a Lampsaco e usata dal 297 al 282 a.C.
